Shallots

Shallots are a variety of onions and are very easy to grow from seeds or sets (baby onions) and are a very popular and versatile vegetable. Originating in South East Asia and common in most cultures.

  • Dig the soil, remove all weeds and add garden compost or a general fertiliser
  • Mid November to mid March plant sets 10 inch apart in rows 16 inches apart. Push in to soil until just tip showing.
  • Water in dry spells and weed. Remove any flower spike immediately.
  • Harvest in July once leaves yellow and fall over.
  • Shallots should be dried in a frost free place before use.
  • Raw – grated in salads, sandwiches.
  • Cooked - the base of most savoury recipes & great baked, fried, sautéed, grilled, pickled and deep-fried!
