
Kale is a type of cabbage with green or purple leaves but it does not form a head like some cabbages. Kale is of great nutritional value and is very hardy. It is also tolerant of most pests and diseases.
- Dig the soil, remove all weeds and add compost or well rotted manure.
- Make ½ inch deep trench and space seeds 3 inches apart between march and June.
- Cover seeds with soil and then water the trench
- As seedlings develop, space - to final positions 1-1 ½ foot apart.
- Water well when transplanting & if weather very dry.
- Feed with a water soluble, high nitrogen feed & remove weeds.
- Harvest leaves by removing young leaves from October.
- Raw – some young leaves can be added to coleslaw & salads.
- Cooked –steamed, stir fried, used as a parcel to steam other foods.
