Cabbage

Cabbages are the commonest member of the brassica family and come in many varieties and colours. They can be grown throughout the year and eaten in many different ways.

  • Sow spring cabbage in July/August.
  • Sow summer cabbage March to May.
  • Sow winter cabbage April/May.
  • Dig the soil, remove all weeds and add compost or well rotted manure.
  • Make ½ inch deep trench and space seeds 3 inch apart.
  • Cover seeds with soil and then water the trench.
  • As seedlings develop, space - to final positions 1-1 ½ foot apart.
  • Water well when transplanting & if weather very dry.
  • Feed spring & summer cabbages with a water soluble, high nitrogen feed & remove weeds.
  • Harvest leaves by cutting them at the base but leave a cross in the stump & smaller cabbages will grow.
  • Raw – some varieties can be grated into coleslaw & salads.
  • Cooked –steamed, stir fried, used as a parcel to steam other foods.
